26 September 2007 - Rangoon, Burma (Yangon, Myanmar) This roadblock was manned by anti-riot police south of Bahan market. They cordoned off the area of confrontation between the monks and police to the south. Shortly aftter we took this picture, around 1210 p.m., shots were fired and tear gas began to rise. Police beatings leave one dead

September 27 - Rangoon, Burma (Yangon, Myanmar) The police began beating the demonstrators savagely, including the first row of monks. This unfortunate man in the picture could not get away. Initially when filming this, it looked like the police had beaten him to death, but when we looked at some closer video later we saw that one soldier had shot him from behind. They launched the flare moments later to produce smoke to try to prevent photos. This was all filmed on video as well. Credit: naingankyatha

Monasteries locked down by Tatmadaw soldiers

27 September, Rangoon, Burma (Yangon, Myanmar) Most monks in Rangoon were unable to join the protests, as their monasteries were occupied by Burmese Army Troops (like in this photo). Rumours are that government forces killed or arrested more than 100 monks overnigt in South Okkalaba and Mo Gaung monasteries. credit: naingankyatha

September 29 - Rangoon, Burma (Yangon, Myanmar) Tatmadaw soldiers expanded their patrols and presence in many of the suburbs, including Thinganyun, Tamwe (Yuzana Plaza), Mo Gaung, South Okkalaba, and Ahlone. There was one successful demonstration organized by students in Latha township, but the rest of city was quiet as soldiers begin stopping buses and pulling off suspected activists.
